The web perspective shows the biomatrix as a web of interacting natural, psycho-social and technological activity and entity systems (as illustrated by the analogy of the fishing net). It views systems as existing in time and space and explores how they are organised and can be changed. These systems can exist in both physical and conceptual reality, analogous to the physical structure of a house and the plan according to which it was built.

The field perspective describes the underlying in-formation which determines the form, function and development of all systems within the biomatrix (analogous to the information of how to make a fishing net). It focuses on the in-formation that gives rise to a system (both in its physical and conceptual reality). It postulates that there is an in-formation field permeating the web of the biomatrix which determines how the systems of the biomatrix unfold and develop.

The term information literally means to put form into, or put into form. The spelling of in-formation (as introduced by the physicist Boehm) emphasises this directing force and attracting power of information.

The universal in-formation field of the biomatrix contains focalised sub-fields of in-formation that are unique to each entity system, called ethos. (The universal in-formation field is illustrated by the orange field behind the web. The specific ethos by the orange dot within each entity system).

There is growing evidence from research in quantum physics, evolutionary biology, cosmology and consciousness that there is a universal in-formation field beyond time and space that underlies all ‘things’ in the universe. Different researchers use different names for it (e.g. Boehm’s implicate order, Sheldrake’s morphogenetic field, Jung’s collective unconscious, Laszlo’s Akashic field or the mystic’s cosmic consciousness). Some claim that this field contains all information: past, present and future.
